TDOT Roadwork and Lane Closures in Middle Tennessee

by Ethan Brooks

Commuters across Middle Tennessee should prepare for a series of travel disruptions as the Tennessee Department of Transportation begins a wide-ranging slate of maintenance and infrastructure projects. The Clarksville-Montgomery County area TDOT work, alongside significant upgrades in Davidson and Robertson counties, is scheduled to ramp up during the second week of April, with many projects beginning April 6.

The upcoming schedule includes a mix of essential resurfacing, bridge repairs, and utility installations designed to improve road safety and longevity. While some projects are limited to overnight hours to minimize congestion, others will occur during peak daytime hours, requiring drivers to navigate flagging operations and single-lane closures.

Because these projects are weather-dependent, the Tennessee Department of Transportation warns that schedules may shift in the event of inclement weather. Motorists are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to reduced speed limits in all active work zones to ensure the safety of road crews.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) manages the upcoming regional roadwork schedule.

Montgomery County and Local State Routes

In Montgomery County, the primary focus will be on State Route 12. From April 6 through April 10, crews will conduct resurfacing operations between linear mile 5.8 and 8.4. To facilitate this work, flagging operations will be in place in both directions from 9:00 a.m. Until 3:00 p.m. Daily.

Drivers using this corridor should expect intermittent delays during these midday windows. This type of resurfacing is critical for preventing potholes and maintaining the structural integrity of the roadway, particularly in areas seeing increased traffic volume.

Beyond Montgomery County, other regional state routes will see similar activity. In Robertson County, SR 76 will undergo pothole patching between linear mile 11 and 15 from April 6 to April 10, also utilizing flagging operations between 9:00 a.m. And 3:00 p.m. Meanwhile, SR 11 will have a single southbound lane closure for aerial installation (LM 10–12), and SR 49 will see single lane closures in both directions for vegetation clearing (LM 18–23) during the same window.

Major Interstate Disruptions: I-40, I-65, and I-24

The most significant impacts on high-volume traffic will occur on the interstate system, particularly within Davidson and Sumner counties. The widening and improvement project on I-65, stretching from Rivergate Parkway toward US 31W, remains a major point of congestion. Daily lane closures will occur on SR 174 (Long Hollow Pike) from 9:00 a.m. To 3:00 p.m. For bridge work.

Nightly operations on I-65 (MM 95–99) will see lane closures in both directions from 8:00 p.m. To 5:00 a.m. While one lane in each direction will remain open, intermittent ramp closures are expected at Rivergate Parkway, US 31W, and SR 174. Cedar Street will be closed nightly during this period for bridge construction, with detours in place.

I-40 will see a heavy concentration of overnight work in Davidson County. Multiple lane closures are scheduled between April 6 and April 9 for bridge repairs at mile markers 217 and 221. Other nightly activities include milling and paving (MM 193–196), restriping (MM 204–208), and barrier wall repairs (MM 215–219).

On I-24, northbound shoulder closures will be in effect from April 6 to April 10 between 9:00 a.m. And 3:00 p.m. For footer replacement at mile marker 44.3. Lighting maintenance and repairs will also cause westbound lane closures on the nights of April 6, 8, and 9.

Regional Work Summary

Scheduled TDOT Maintenance Windows (April 6–12)
County Primary Route Activity Type Primary Time Window
Montgomery SR 12 Resurfacing Daytime (9am–3pm)
Davidson I-40 / I-65 Bridge & Paving Nightly (8pm–5am)
Robertson SR 11 / 49 / 76 Various Maintenance Daytime (9am–3pm)
Dickson SR 47 Aerial Fiber Daytime (9am–3pm)
Humphreys I-40 Milling & Paving Nightly (8pm–5am)

Robertson and Dickson County Utility Work

Utility and infrastructure upgrades are also a priority in the outlying counties. In Dickson County, SR 47 will experience single lane closures in both directions from April 6 to April 10 between 9:00 a.m. And 3:00 p.m. For the installation of aerial fiber, which is expected to improve digital connectivity in the area.

Robertson County will face a brief but total disruption on I-65 on April 12. A rolling roadblock will be implemented from 6:00 a.m. To 7:00 a.m. Between mile markers 106 and 116 to allow for an aerial crossing. Here’s a high-impact event that typically causes sudden backups, and drivers are encouraged to avoid the stretch during that hour.

Further maintenance in Robertson County includes a lane shift on SR 65 for milling, paving, and striping from April 8 to April 9, occurring overnight from 8:00 p.m. To 5:00 a.m.

Navigating the Closures

To avoid unnecessary delays, TDOT recommends that motorists utilize real-time data tools. The TDOT SmartWay Information System provides an interactive map of current construction and traffic conditions. Drivers can dial 511 from any phone or visit TN511.com for the most current alerts.

Safety officials remind the public that using mobile phones to check traffic updates while driving is prohibited and dangerous. Motorists should plan their routes before departing or use hands-free systems to monitor conditions.

The next major checkpoint for these projects will be the completion of the SR 12 resurfacing and the I-65 rolling roadblock on April 12, after which TDOT typically releases updated schedules for the following week.
