A case of apparent religious discrimination caused revolt among students at Colégio Estadual Amaro Cavalcanti, in Largo do Machado, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, after a teacher forbade a student to read the Bible at school, even when she was in her free time, that is, , outside teaching hours.
According to information from the newspaper O Globo, the teacher would have released the students after the end of an activity. They, in that free time, could do anything, so much so that some took pictures and used the internet.
Seeing that a student, however, took advantage of the break to read the Bible, the teacher reacted with intolerance: “If you want to read the Bible, go to church, not to school”, allegedly said the teacher, who also forbade the girl to take the holy book to college.
The student’s mother became aware of the case through a WhatsApp group, and decided to go to the school to take action. “I went to the school to hear the direction. I was attended by a teacher, who apologized, but said that it was no big deal, that it must have been by accident. I even said: ‘I need to talk to the teacher, to find out why’”, said the mother.
Based on the reports of other students who witnessed the discrimination, the mother said that the teacher “was taking selfies with other students, why did he embarrass my daughter to take the Bible to school?”.

According to the mother of the discriminated against student, other students were also embarrassed, as they noticed the wrong attitude of the teacher, whose name was not disclosed.
“I want him to be removed from school, since, like my daughter, many students no longer want to take classes with him”, continued the mother. “Students say that this is not the first time this has happened, that he even calls the boys dumb. It is disgusting and revolting, as it comes from someone who is there to set an example.”
A colleague of the student, victim of discrimination, confirmed the episode, describing what happened. “There were some students talking, others messing with the phone, which is a wrong thing, and he took it and forbade her to take the bible? We didn’t believe what he said and she”, said the young woman.
After the case ended up at the police station, where the student’s mother denounced the teacher for religious and racial discrimination, the State Department of Education (Seeduc) reported that it removed the teacher from the activities and opened an investigation to investigate what happened.
