The political parties’ agreement on education in Lithuania envisages achieving that in 2024 at the end, the average salary of teachers would be 130 percent. national average wage. Taking into account the agreements, from September of this year teachers’ wages should have increased by at least 10%.
However, after evaluating the Economic Development Scenario published by the Ministry of Finance, it is predicted that the country’s average wage will grow faster than planned, therefore, in order to fulfill the above-mentioned obligations, teachers’ salaries need to be increased by 15.5%.
The government intends to correspondingly increase the average conditional salary coefficient of the teacher, the coefficients for organizing and managing the educational process, the coefficients for educational assistance, the coefficient for financing education programs that supplement formal education.
After the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports reviewed the financing of schools, the Cabinet of Ministers also approved the proposal that the previously valid agreement to reduce funds for overcrowded classes should be valid only for classes that are formed for the first time. Therefore, funds will be reduced only for those overcrowded classes in which education begins in 2024-2025 according to the first and second parts of the primary, secondary, basic education program.
“It would be unreasonable to apply the new regulation due to the reduction of funds to classes that have already been formed and continue education according to the same educational program until the emergence of such regulation,” states the project provided by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
