41% of respondents are ready to sign a consent to process a fingerprint, and 35% – to process a face image. The authors of the study explain this by the widespread use of these technologies – they are used in smartphones, personal computers and when obtaining visas.

Almost half of the respondents are afraid that their data will be stolen and used without their knowledge and that this data cannot be changed, unlike the password (43% supported this fear). Another 29% called such data too personal. At the same time, about 30% of those who are not ready to provide biometrics will agree to this if the organization fulfills additional conditions – for example, it will use such data along with passwords, codes, etc.

Why organizations need biometrics

Alexey Kuzmin, head of the biometric technologies and authentication systems group at the Jet Infosystems Center for Applied Security Systems, points out the lack of data on how many employers are currently using biometric technologies in Russia. “From open sources it is possible to identify the industries where biometric technologies are developing the most. These are transport and city security systems, banking, sports facilities, and retail. Biometrics are mainly used to provide access to the territory of the company, access to premises within organizations, access to computers and access to information systems of organizations, ”said Kuzmin.

For example, since 2019, biometrics have been used to access the offices of Sistema and Sberbank. As the representative of Sistema Sergey Kopytov explained, this was done primarily for the convenience of employees, who do not need to constantly have a physical pass with them. In addition, the technology allows you to improve the efficiency of time tracking, scheduling office space utilization and internal security. “Since our company needs a photo of an employee on a regular plastic pass, no one reacted negatively to the use of the same photo in the access control and management system. No additional biometric data is collected, ”Kopytov added. In Sberbank, more than 50 office buildings are equipped with special terminals for biometric identification, a representative of the organization said. “Undoubtedly, the use of this technology is welcomed by employees, because it simplifies their life and makes visiting the office more comfortable,” he said.

However, Dmitry Markov, CEO of VisionLabs, which implemented a biometrics access system at AFK and Sberbank, admits that, like any other technology that is at an early stage of development, while it causes mistrust and apprehension and it will take time for convenience and the benefits outweighed employees’ fears of data leakage or misuse. Dmitry Morozov, Development Director of Tridivi (3DiVi Inc.), says that employees are afraid of compromising personal data both at the company level and at the level of government services, since now such services store biometrics centrally, there is no clear and simple control mechanism for employees over using it. In his opinion, the level of confidence in biometrics can be increased due to new technological solutions – for example, based on distributed ledgers.

The Ministry of Finance called biometrics leaks “the worst thing that can happen”

Despite low trust, Kuzmin said the technology will continue to evolve and become the most common identification method. Markov cites data from Brandessence Market Research, according to which in 2020 the volume of the face recognition market in the world amounted to $ 3.6 billion, and by 2027 it will reach $ 11.6 billion. He stressed that now biometrics “is one of the most promising and secure ways of identification “. According to Markov, the introduction of biometrics, in addition to offices, is in demand at industrial plants and construction sites to control access to hazardous or service areas, as well as to detect overalls and personal protective equipment on a network of cameras, which helps to increase industrial safety. “In retail, employees often use time tracking using biometrics, which makes it possible to check in even from a mobile phone. Banks are interested in a case with face authentication at the workplace, since employees deal with important and often classified information, ”said the head of VisionLabs.
