Italo-German, Domenico Tedesco, free since his departure from Leipzig and the Bundesliga, could succeed Roberto Martinez at the head of Belgium.

Italian-German coach Domenico Tedesco, free since leaving RB Leipzig last September, would hold the rope to succeed Spaniard Roberto Martinez as Belgium coach, according to several local media on Monday.

The daily The newspapaer claims that the former coach of Schalke 04 (2017-2019) and Spartak Moscow (2019-2021), 37, is a favorite among the candidates selected by the working group of the Belgian Federation which must appoint the future coach national.

The latter did not comment and refers to a later communication, perhaps at the end of the week according to several sources.

Before Leipzig, Tedesco took charge of FC Erzgebirge Aue five years ago, managing to keep the club in the German second division in extremis. The technician then led Schalke 04 to the Champions League, before being pushed out the following season after a 7-0 defeat against Manchester City.

After Spartak Moscow, Tedesco then returned to the Bundesliga to guide Leipzig, who were mid-table the previous season, to a Champions League place, a Europa League semi-final and a cup victory. Despite these good performances, Leipzig sacked him in September 2022 after a missed start to the league.

Polyglot (he speaks German, English, Italian, Spanish and Russian), with a university degree in industrial engineering, Tedesco has no past as a professional player.

Belgium, eliminated in the first round of the World Cup-2022, must play its first qualifying match for Euro-2024 on March 24 in Sweden, before a friendly match against Germany four days later.

The new coach will succeed Roberto Martinez, who left to lead Portugal, after allowing Belgium to reach 1st place in the Fifa rankings for three years while obtaining their best result in a major tournament with 3rd place in the 2018 World Cup.
