Teenagers Accused of Attempted Drowning of Dog in Brazil Amidst Outcry Over Animal Cruelty
A disturbing incident in florianópolis, Brazil, has sparked outrage after security camera footage captured three teenagers allegedly throwing a dog, known as Caramelo, into the sea. The event unfolded in Praia Brava and is currently under examination by the Civil Police of Santa Catarina (PCSC), coming shortly after the community mourned the brutal death of another local dog, Orelha.
The footage, according to reports, shows Caramelo approaching the teenagers on the beach.One individual is seen picking up the animal, followed by a sequence where one of the group runs toward the water with the dog.Fortunately, according to PCSC, Caramelo managed to escape and was later found without any apparent injuries. the case remains open as authorities continue their investigation.
Initially, there were concerns that the teenagers involved in the incident with Caramelo might be connected to the investigation surrounding the death of Orelha. Though, a senior official clarified that the two groups are distinct.
The attack on Caramelo has amplified the grief and anger surrounding Orelha’s death, which deeply affected the Praia Brava community. Orelha, affectionately known as “Preto,” had been a beloved fixture in the area for nearly a decade, cared for by residents, fishermen, and local business owners. He was brutally beaten with sticks, sustaining severe injuries that ultimately lead to his euthanasia. The incident prompted demonstrations and widespread calls for justice.
Three teenagers are currently considered suspects in Orelha’s death. The dog was discovered with extensive wounds and, due to the severity of his injuries, veterinarians were forced to euthanize him.
In a positive turn, Caramelo has found a new home with Ulisses Gabriel, the general delegate of the PCSC. Gabriel announced the adoption on social media on Thursday, February 20th, confirming that the dog is safe and described him as “quite energetic.”
