Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai expressed immense satisfaction and pride as the highly anticipated light rail system was ceremonially inaugurated in Gush Dan. In an interview with News 12 on Friday, Mayor Huldai described the light rail as a significant investment of effort and a groundbreaking milestone in the city’s transportation history.
“For 23 years, I have been involved in the human line, and this is the first time we have modern mass transportation,” Mayor Huldai shared. He emphasized that the introduction of the light rail would bring about significant changes in the transportation landscape of Tel Aviv.
Despite the triumphant occasion, the day was not without its share of controversy. Protesters against the government made their presence felt at various light rail stations. The demonstration highlighted the discontent and grievances of a section of the population, who were unsatisfied with the government’s policies.
Another contentious issue that surfaced was the potential removal of Hayut from the panel of judges at the High Court of Reasonability, a move that the government was exercising. As the story unfolds, it is expected to garner further attention and scrutiny.
Looking towards the future, Mayor Huldai shared ambitious plans for expanding the transportation infrastructure. He revealed that in a few years, Tel Aviv aims to have a remarkable 69 train stations, connecting every corner of the city to the light rail network.
Avoiding any direct comments on accusations made by Minister of Transportation Miri Regev, who accused him of boycotting the light rail’s opening ceremony for political reasons, Mayor Huldai opted to remain tight-lipped on the subject.
However, he did not shy away from criticising the fact that the light rail system does not operate during Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest. Mayor Huldai argued that public transportation should be accessible to all, even on weekends, as people deserve convenient transportation options on their day off. He denounced any reason, other than political motives, for the absence of train services on Shabbat.
The light rail system in Tel Aviv is seen as a significant step towards enhancing the city’s public transportation network.
