The Telegram administration monitors the actions of users and bots who are collecting data and coordinates for subsequent military strikes. Such accounts are immediately blocked, said the founder of the messenger, Pavel Durov. Otherwise, he said, the platform tries to follow the principles of freedom and not limit users.

Mr. Durov recalled that after the start of the special operation, he considered the possibility of blocking the messenger in Ukraine and Russia in order to avoid the spread of false information and propaganda. However, then users spoke out against such a decision, and Mr. Durov abandoned the idea of blocking.

“We continue to block accounts and bots that collect coordinates for strikes or publish direct personal information with calls for violence. We don’t want Telegram to be a tool of violence – so please let us know about such channels/bots if you see them,” he wrote in his Telegram channel.

However, Mr. Durov added, “certain changes” may affect users with Ukrainian SIM cards. This is due to official requests from Apple that are received by the messenger. These requests concern channels that disseminate propaganda and news. The messenger needs to take into account such requests from application stores in order to remain available in them, the entrepreneur specified. Mr. Durov did not specify exactly what changes in the work of the messenger may occur for Ukrainian users.

At the end of March, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov called on Pavel Durov to pay attention to the fact that his messenger is used by terrorists for negotiations. This happened after the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall. Shortly after Mr. Peskov’s statement, Roskomnadzor announced the blocking of 11 Telegram channels that disseminated messages about new possible attacks.
