A Paris court will likely decide whether to indict
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was released from police custody on the 28th (local time), four days after his arrest, and taken to court for questioning on whether to indict him.
According to CNN and AFP, Durov was taken out of his detention facility on the outskirts of Paris in a police vehicle that afternoon.
The Paris prosecutor’s office said Durov will now face a Paris court’s decision on whether to indict him.
AFP reported that a judge will decide whether to charge Durov and whether to detain him or restrict his movements under judicial control.
Durov was arrested on the 24th after arriving at Le Bourget Airport in Paris, France, aboard a private plane from Azerbaijan. He was then detained for four days and questioned by French investigators.
Durov is accused of 12 counts of crimes including fraud, drug trafficking, and conspiracy to distribute child pornography.
Russia is protesting against the French authorities’ arrest of Durov. Telegram is known to be a key communication tool for Russia during its war with Ukraine. On that day, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, “It seems that the French leadership has once again shown its blatant attitude of trampling on international norms in the field of protecting freedom of speech and expression.”
However, French President Emmanuel Macron stated on the 26th regarding Durov’s arrest that “it was not a political decision at all.”
