Telegram creator reported arrested in France

French media reported that Pavel Durovcreator of the encrypted messaging app Telegramwas arrested in France.

Reports indicate that Durov was intercepted by French authorities when his private plane touched down at Le Bourget airport outside Paris.

French news channels like BFMTV y TF1 anonymous sources quoted as saying that the Russian businessman was subjected to a search warrant and that the investigation focuses on the lack of Telegram moderators and the possible criminal activity of some users of the platform such as money laundering, drug trafficking and the exchange of child sexual abuse content.

Pavel came out of Russia in 2014 after losing control of his other social media company called Vkontakte (VK) by refusing to give in to his government’s demands to remove opposition groups from the platform and refusing to provide data on Ukrainian protesters to Russian security agencies.

The founder of Telegram became a French citizen in August 2021 and also holds the nationality of the United Arab Emirates.
