South Korean police announced on Monday that they have opened an investigation against Telegram, which they accused“recommend” the spread of fake pornographic content using specifically images of young people. Nude profiles are psychologically produced profiles, in which individual people’s faces are placed on sexual photos or videos.

“Telegram apologizes again”

Following a request from the regulatory authority, the Korea Communications Commission (KCSC), the Telegram app announced that it had deleted 25 pieces of content – out of several thousand – showing sexual abuse, Yonhap agency reported on Tuesday.

“Telegram also apologizes for the poor communication on the matter and provides a dedicated email address for future communications with the media manager”Yonhap added, referring to KCSC.

Cybercrime is widespread in South Korea, according to activists, including the misuse of spy cameras and the publication of private pornographic content that is shared without permission as a form of revenge. After the announcement of a police investigation in South Korea, the messaging service Telegram confirmed to Agence France-Presse on Monday that it “Monitoring harmful content on your platform, including illegal pornography”.

The investigation opened by the Seoul police comes after the arrest, on August 28 in France, of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov. After four days in police custody, the billionaire was released but remains under heavy judicial supervision with a ban on leaving French territory. According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, he was specifically charged for “refusal to communicate information necessary for interceptions authorized by law” and complicity in crimes and crimes organized by the platform.
