Telekom has announced a tariff that allows customers to use the full 5G data power. It is not only fast, but above all accessible to a few.

Starting in the fall, Telekom mobile phone customers will have a new tariff option that is designed to be particularly stable and fast: 5G+ Gaming. The company announced this during the Gamescom gaming trade fair in Cologne. However, hardly anyone will be able to use the improved tariff at launch.

Background: Anyone who books the option will be able to surf the operator’s so-called “5G Standalone” network (5G SA), which is considered particularly fast because it offers higher data rates and low latency. Because the previous 5G networks use the old 4G/LTE infrastructure, experts also refer to the standalone network as “real 5G”.

With the Telekom tariff option, customers can then surf via the modern standalone network – with exceptions. According to Telekom, initially only the top phone Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra supports the new standard.

Another requirement for using the “5G+ Gaming” option is to book a MagentaMobil tariff from Telekom. During a six-month “promotional period”, 100 games will be available free of charge for customers to try out via the fast connection – including popular multiplayer games such as Fortnite and PUBG.

It is not known when Telekom’s “5G Standalone” network will be activated for other cell phones. Telekom’s chief technology officer Abdu Mudesir had already announced last year in an interview with the IT portal “Golem” that the network operator would be able to “offer 5G Standalone nationwide at the touch of a button in the next few months.”

So far, O2 is the only one of the three operators in Germany that has completely converted its network to “5G Standalone” and whose 5G network completely dispenses with the technology of the previous standard 4G. According to a list from the network operator, almost all common cell phones from the major manufacturers (5G SA) support the O2 network.
