Gaming on smartphones is becoming increasingly popular. Mobile companies have also recognized this trend. Many of them are represented at the gaming fair in Cologne with their own stands. Telekom is now even introducing a tariff option specifically for gamers.

Telekom 5G+ Gaming

The new tariff option from Telekom is called “5G+ Gaming” and aims to provide a lag-free gaming experience on the go. The option can be booked starting this fall in the Magenta Mobil app. There are no additional costs involved. You just need a current MagentaMobil tariff with 5G.

The faster latency is realized through Telekom’s 5G standalone network (SA). To expand 5G as quickly and cost-effectively as possible, most mobile sites in Germany use so-called 5G NSA (non-standalone). In this case, in addition to the new 5G antennas, existing LTE infrastructure is utilized. However, Telefonica and Vodafone already offer 5G SA at some locations. Telekom will also start doing so by the end of this year.

The respective smartphone must also support 5G SA. While almost every current smartphone supports 5G in NSA operation, SA only works with selected models and only after activation by the manufacturer. Thus, the new Telekom option will initially only be available for users with a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. However, additional models are expected to be added.

New Cloud Gaming Platform

Together with ALSO Deutschland GmbH, Telekom is also presenting a cloud gaming platform at Gamescom. It is called “Sora Stream” and will be offered for free for a period of six months. Through the platform, you can play over 100 games for free. Titles mentioned include PUBG and Fortnite. The cost of access after the trial period is currently unknown.

At Gamescom, gaming with the 5G+ Gaming option is showcased alongside TikTok star DI1ARAA and mobile gamer BigSpin. On stage, the two competed against each other in Fortnite. While mobile gamer BigSpin struggled with numerous stutters over the regular 5G network, DI1ARAA’s game ran smoothly using the new 5G+ Gaming option. However, it was admitted that this was only a demonstration of the concept and not a real demonstration of the technology, as the 5G SA network will not be available until fall. By then, we will know what advantages the new free option truly offers.
