Former President Michel Temer on the Royal Policy Podcast
Former President Michel Temer was Wilson Pedroso’s guest for the 11th episode of Política Real, a new podcast on political, electoral and current affairs. During the conversation, the former president spoke about his trajectory in public life, recalled the backstage after the Carandiru massacre, in 1992, and sent a message to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva saying that “in fact, he destroyed a lot of things that the PT did”.
The Royal Policy Podcast is the newest project by Pedroso, an electoral consultant who has already led important political campaigns and was Secretary of State during the administration of João Doria. In each episode, he receives several Brazilian personalities for a sincere chat about politics, elections and other current topics. The recordings can be seen in full on Spotify and Youtube.
Upon receiving Temer, Pedroso asked the former president about the controversial episode in which Lula called the former president a “coup leader” on a visit to Montevideo, Uruguay. “He [Lula] I even said something inappropriate because, when you’re out of the country, you shouldn’t talk about domestic politics, but international politics. But, from there, he said: ‘yeah, because the scammer’ and he even named it, he gave my name. I said: ‘well, I won’t let it go’. He even said that I destroyed everything the PT had done. Then I released a note saying that, in fact, the president is right,” he said.
Then, Temer reinforced the charge against Lula and the PT administrations: “I destroyed everything the PT did. For example, I destroyed a negative 5% GDP and built a positive 1.8% GDP. I destroyed an inflation from 10% to 2.75%, I destroyed a Selic interest rate from 14.25% to 6.5%. I destroyed many things, I destroyed that thing with state-owned companies, I carried out labor reforms and the spending cap. In fact, we destroyed a lot of what the PT did, but in a positive sense”, he concluded.
Carandiru
Pedroso recalled several episodes in the public life of Michel Temer, who was a constituent federal deputy and held the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies three times (1997-1999, 1999-2001 and 2009-2010). Before that, when he held the position of Attorney General of the State of São Paulo, he faced major challenges when he took charge of the Secretariat of Public Security shortly after a police action that resulted in the death of 111 inmates in the former Carandiru prison.
Temer detailed the backstage of that tension-filled moment and told the conditions he posed to lead the dissolution of the crisis that had installed itself in the Government of São Paulo. He took over the portfolio at the invitation of the then governor Luiz Antonio Fleury Filho: “He said to me: ‘look, I’m going to need you’. I said: ‘no, you have to honor the secretary, right?’ the secretary himself [Pedro Campos] he was there, a very upright man, and he said, ‘The press won’t let me go on.’ They insisted so much that I said yes, ”he said.
Temer also recalled requests to Fleury for there to be no inauguration ceremony and total autonomy at the head of Public Security in São Paulo. And he also spoke about a lunch with the command of the Military Police. “The colonels were restless because they thought it was unfair to fire the PM commander. I said: ‘look, I’ll keep the commander’. That eased, and life moved on. I stayed for another two years and we took that inquiry forward, with all prudence, but with all rigor, and we took Security forward ”, he concluded.

With long experience in political campaigns and management in public administration, the electoral consultant launched his newest project in 2023, the Politics Real podcast. In addition to Temer, he has already interviewed personalities such as former governor Doria, the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes, and businessman Geraldo Rufino. The Royal Policy addresses political, electoral and other current affairs in a light and balanced way and is available on Youtube and Spotify, with new episodes always on Thursdays at 7 pm.
Pedroso commanded the Private Secretariat of the State of São Paulo between 2019 and 2022 and was regional mayor of the region of Sapopemba and Vila Prudente in the capital, among other positions he held in public administration. Over the past 30 years, he coordinated important political campaigns such as those of João Doria, Bruno Covas and Rodrigo Garcia.
