UN Security Council calls on Iran to suspend uranium enrichment The 2015 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty was signed between the six permanent members of the Security Council: the United States, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, France and Germany.
The United States pulled out of the deal in 2018, citing flaws. It also imposed sanctions on Iran. Following this, Iran ignored one by one the terms of the nuclear deal. This risked diluting the nuclear deal.
This was followed by talks in Vienna, the capital of Austria, between Iran and other non-US signatories on the retention of the nuclear deal. The United States was also an indirect participant in the talks.
It was reported that the talks had reached a final stage and that a renewed nuclear deal would be finalized soon.
In this context, US and European sanctions on Russia over the war in Ukraine have been a stumbling block to negotiations on a nuclear deal.
Russia has demanded the lifting of sanctions on its country in support of a renewed nuclear deal. Negotiations on a nuclear deal have been put on hold due to the issue.
