Certain foods can cause uncomfortable itching. Those affected usually have an allergy or intolerance.

1 / 10Certain foods can cause itching on the skin. It is usually natural components or additives such as coloring or preservatives that trigger a so-called pseudoallergic intolerance reaction. For example, some people react to histamine with allergy-like symptoms such as reddening of the skin, a runny nose or even itching. Sauerkraut is one of the fermented foods that all contain histamine and can lead to intolerance reactions in sensitive people. © Marek Uliasz/IMAGO

bananas
4 / 10Bananas can also cause an itch if you have a banana allergy. The allergic reaction does not always come directly from the fruit: it is usually based on a cross-allergy in the form of hypersensitivity to latex or certain fruits such as mango, avocado or kiwi. The symptoms of a banana allergy are varied and can include blisters in the mouth and on the skin, reddening of the skin and hives. © Nadim Mahjoub/IMAGO
tomatoes
5 / 10Pollen allergy sufferers sometimes also have an allergic reaction to tomatoes or strawberries. The two foods can cause allergic reactions due to the presence of different allergenic proteins, such as proteins similar to the main birch pollen allergen. Because of this similarity, they can lead to a birch pollen-associated food allergy. The allergic reaction can manifest itself on the skin, among other things, and be shown by urticaria (nettle rash) or dermatitis, which in turn can cause itching. © Design Pics/IMAGO
Cup of coffee
6 / 10Anyone who suffers from neurodermatitis should avoid alcoholic beverages and coffee or limit their consumption, as these can increase blood circulation in the skin. This in turn worsens the itching – a symptom typical of the disease. Coffee can also cause problems with histamine intolerance and should therefore only be drunk in moderation. Because the caffeine it contains blocks the enzyme diamine oxidase, which is responsible for breaking down histamine in the body. © Alex Bramwell/IMAGO
chocolates
7 / 10Just as with red wine, people who suffer from histamine intolerance should also do without another luxury food or reduce their consumption: chocolate. The candy is a so-called histamine liberator. Chocolate therefore contains ingredients that release histamine and can thus trigger typical symptoms such as itching in those affected. © Design Pics/IMAGO
Yeast
8 / 10An intolerance to yeast or a yeast allergy can lead to typical reactions such as stomach problems, reactions of the respiratory tract or even itching. There are many products that contain yeast and can trigger an allergic reaction in those affected. Yeast is not only found in bread, but can also be found in beer, wine and vinegar. © Westend61/IMAGO

Depending on the part of the body, there can be different causes behind an itching on the skin. Usually there are harmless triggers that cause the urge to scratch or rub the skin. Sometimes, however, diseases or allergies and incompatibilities behind it. For example, who under a Histaminintoleranz should therefore adjust their diet and better avoid certain foods that contain histamine to prevent symptoms such as itching. But other food allergies or cross-allergies can also lead to the annoying symptom.

Itching: 10 foods that can trigger it

With the help of a home remedy, you can easily provide relief in acute cases. Undiluted apple cider vinegar can be used to effectively disinfect wounds or treat insect bites if it is itchy. But also Black tea or yoghurt naturally help with constant itching. Doctors can also prescribe topical creams and ointments containing cortisone. Sometimes certain antihistamines are also an option.

Antihistamines inhibit the effect of the endogenous substance histamine, which plays an important role in inflammation in the body and causes itching. Especially if it itches at night, an antihistamine can do a good job, as it also makes you tired as a side effect. How an itch is treated depends on the cause, of course. In some cases, however, it can take several weeks for the appropriate therapy to respond.
