Ten fighters of the Islamic State jihadist group were hanged in Iraq today in execution of death sentences for terrorism, Reuters reported, citing security sources. The executions took place in a prison in the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah, and all hanged were Iraqi citizens.

The 10 men were found guilty of joining the Islamic State militant group and committing “serious terrorist crimes,” the sources told Reuters.

Iraq hanged eleven militants sentenced to death on terrorism charges in April, drawing criticism from Amnesty International. The international human rights organization expressed its concern that many people may have been executed in secret, given the “alarming lack of transparency” regarding executions in Iraq in recent months, BTA reported.

Iraq has put hundreds of suspected jihadists on trial and carried out several mass executions since defeating Islamic State militants in a US-backed military campaign from 2014 to 2017, according to Reuters.
