Political split within the CNL: Suspension of President Agathon Rwasa

Bujumbura, July 4, 2023 – In accordance with the internal policy of Burundi and that of the political parties, the National Congress for Freedom (CNL) experienced a split within its political bureau. In a statement, ten members of the board made public the decision to suspend Hon. Rwasa Agathon from his position as president and legal representative of the CNL. This action follows numerous charges against the Hon. Rwasa, in particular of conspiracy against party organs, embezzlement of funds and property. These ten members, who represent half of the political bureau of the CNL, had themselves been previously suspended by Hon. Rwasa. In response, Mr. Bizimungu Simon, secretary general of the CNL, called on activists not to attach value to this press release, stressing that these ten members [1] had recently been relieved of their responsibilities. However, the latter had appointed Mr. Bizimungu Simon to temporarily assume the leadership of the party. Here is their press release:
