The converter stations have been designed by TenneT and the industry and will all be the same. They each have a capacity of 2 gigawatts. They convert the electricity generated by the wind turbines into a stronger current that is then brought ashore. There it is converted into alternating current that can be used on the high-voltage grid.

The capacity of the converter stations is much higher than is currently the case for such converters. As a result, fewer cables are needed to land, which is more efficient, but also better for the environment. According to TenneT, the combined capacity of 28 gigawatts corresponds to that of 28 large power stations.

Contracts for the new stations were awarded to four partnerships: Hitachi and Petrofac, GE and Sembcorp Marine, GE and McDermott, and Siemens Energy and Dragados. It had already become clear last year that Chinese parties were not allowed to participate in tenders for critical infrastructure, such as the power grid.
