Tennis Abuse: Players Face Online Threats & Racism – Aiava Speaks Out

by Liam O'Connor Sports Editor

The world of professional tennis is reckoning with accusations of deep-seated cultural issues, as Australian player Destanee Aiava publicly described the sport as “racist, misogynistic, homophobic and hostile.” Aiava’s comments, shared online, come amid growing scrutiny of the pressures faced by athletes and the prevalence of online abuse within the sport. The conversation around tennis and online abuse has intensified recently, with data revealing a significant rise in threatening messages directed at players.

According to figures released by data science firm Signify, the International Tennis Federation (ITF), and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), approximately 8,000 abusive, violent, or threatening messages were sent to 458 tennis players through social media in 2024. A significant portion of this abuse, officials say, stems from online betting activity. Aiava specifically cited receiving “hate or death threats” and facing constant commentary on her “body, my career, or whatever they want to nitpick.”

A Culture of Exclusion?

Aiava’s critique goes beyond individual attacks, challenging the very foundations of the sport’s public image. She criticized what she sees as a façade of “class and gentlemanly values,” arguing that “behind the white outfits and traditions is a culture that’s racist, misogynistic, homophobic and hostile to anyone who doesn’t fit the mould.” Her words resonate with a broader conversation about inclusivity and representation within tennis, a sport historically dominated by certain demographics.

The impact of this abuse, Aiava revealed, has been deeply personal. “It also took things from me,” she stated, referencing the toll on her “relationship with my body, my health, my family, [and] my self-worth.” Despite the challenges, Aiava expressed a sense of resilience, adding, “Would I do it all again? I really don’t know, but one thing this sport taught me is that there is always a chance to start fresh.”

Combating Online Abuse: A Growing Concern

The rise in online abuse directed at tennis players hasn’t gone unnoticed by governing bodies. In January 2024, the ITF, WTA, All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), and United States Tennis Association (USTA) launched a coordinated effort to combat online harassment, utilizing the Threat Matrix service developed by Signify. Threat Matrix currently protects 7,739 players competing in ITF World Tennis Tour tournaments and 563 players competing in WTA tournaments.

The system, which operates in 39 languages, automatically monitors social media posts on platforms like X, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok for abusive content. It’s designed to provide rapid threat assessment, alert social media platforms to remove offending content, and support law enforcement investigations in serious cases. All players competing in the main draw and qualifying rounds of Wimbledon and the US Open, as well as chair umpires at those events, are also covered by the service.

The Role of Sports Betting

The connection between online abuse and sports betting is a key area of concern. The WTA and ITF recently published a report highlighting the scale of abuse linked to gambling, and are urging the gambling industry to take more responsibility for the actions of those who engage in harassment. The report’s findings are based on data collected through the Threat Matrix service.

What’s Next?

As of Monday, February 16, 2026, tennis officials have not publicly commented on Aiava’s specific allegations. However, the governing bodies are expected to address the broader issue of online abuse and the need for a more inclusive culture within the sport in the coming weeks. The ITF and WTA are continuing to work with Signify to refine the Threat Matrix system and expand its reach. Further updates on the implementation of anti-abuse measures and the response to Aiava’s comments are expected to be released following internal discussions and consultations with players and stakeholders.

Aiava’s courageous decision to speak out has sparked a vital conversation about the darker side of professional tennis. Her experience underscores the urgent need for systemic change and a commitment to creating a safe and respectful environment for all athletes.
