Tennis ball chaos again! Protests at Mainz 05 against Union Berlin

by time news

1. FSV Mainz 05 and 1. FC Union Berlin share the points in the supplementary game of the 18th round of the Bundesliga.

The “Karnevalklub” and the “Eiserne” draw 1-1 in a turbulent basement duel in adverse weather conditions.

The first big excitement occurred in the “MEWA Arena” in the 10th minute: Union defender Knoche hit Mainz striker Ajorque with his foot in the face after a corner, but there was no penalty whistle.

Interruption and wild extra time

The first half was dominated by renewed fan protests. From the 36th minute onwards, Union fans threw objects, including tennis balls, onto the pitch to protest against the investor involvement sought by the German Football League, causing an interruption of over ten minutes.

In the correspondingly long stoppage time in the first half, things went haywire. Burkardt gave the home team a 1-0 lead after a corner kick (45+8), but Union Berlin had the right answer ready before the half-time whistle through Gosens (45+13).

After the break nothing changed in the result – the game ended with a fair 1-1 draw.

Karim Onisiwo played for Mainz for over 80 minutes, Philipp Mwene sat on the bench for the full game time. Union captain Christopher Trimmel is missing due to a red card.

Union Berlin is still in 15th place in the table, while Mainz 05 is in 17th and therefore second to last place.
