South Korea’s leading male tennis player Kwon Soon-woo (ranked 349th) has been denied entry into the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Kwon Soon-woo announced on the 17th through his social network service (SNS) account that he would not be able to compete in the Paris Olympics.
He explained, “I will not be able to compete in the Paris Olympics due to the recent ankle injury that has not improved. I would like to express my gratitude and apologies to those who have always supported me.”
Kwon Soon-woo, who suffered an ankle injury at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Daegu International Men’s Tournament held in Daegu early last month, participated in Wimbledon and the ATP Hamburg Open while receiving treatment for the injury. He was eliminated in the first round of both tournaments.
Kwon Soon-woo’s ankle injury appears to have worsened while playing in the first round of the Hamburg Open on the 16th.
Kwon Soon-woo is currently ranked only 349th in the world in men’s singles, but he secured his spot in the Olympics by being recognized as ranked 80th through the Protected Ranking system.
The men’s singles tennis qualification for the Paris Olympics was determined based on the world rankings as of the 10th of this month.
Kwon Soon-woo was not able to secure a spot on the roster when the announcement was made on the 10th, but he was only included in the reserve list. However, he dramatically secured a spot when some of the players ahead of him dropped out.
However, as his ankle condition worsened, he was ultimately unable to compete.
With Kwon Soon-woo, the only player who had secured a ticket to the Paris Olympics, unable to compete, Korean tennis will not be able to send a single player to this Olympics.
