Athletes continue to get involved in the Israel-Hamas conflict. The latest, Tunisian Ons Jabeur has decided to donate part of her winnings obtained during the end-of-year WTA Masters in Cancún “to help the Palestinians”. After her victory against Marketa Vondrousova on the night of Wednesday to Thursday (6-3, 6-4), the world number 7 made this announcement on the court directly at the end of the match.
“It’s very hard to see children, babies die every day. This breaks my heart. So I decided to donate part of my prize money to help the Palestinians,” she explained to the audience. Visibly very moved, the Tunisian assured that it was not a “political message”.

“I can’t be happy with this victory with what’s happening. I’m sorry, we’re here for tennis, but it’s so frustrating. (…) It’s not a political message, just humanity, I want peace in the world, that’s all,” regretted the 29-year-old player, finalist at Wimbledon in the last two editions.
Ons Jabeur then shared this announcement on social networks, broadcasting images of his speech. “This is me trying to make this victory count beyond a tennis court,” she wrote alongside a small dove, a symbol of peace.
On a sporting level, Jabeur, severely beaten from the start by the American Coco Gauff (6-0, 6-1) relaunched in this group B of the Masters, this tournament which brings together the eight best players of the year . With success in two matches, she will play her qualification for the semi-finals on the last day against world number 1 Iga Swiatek. Caroline Garcia, defending champion, did not qualify for the tournament.
