Sébastien Grosjean is the new coach of young French hopeful Arthur Fils (38th in the world) and is in fact relinquishing his position as captain of the French Davis Cup team, the French Tennis Federation (FFT) announced this Monday evening via of press release.

“After guiding the French team with passion and determination for four years, Sébastien Grosjean has made the decision to leave his position to devote himself to a new mission. From this day on, he becomes the personal trainer of young French hopeful Arthur Fils,” writes the FFT.

Arthur Fils, 19, who was coached by Laurent Raymond, revealed himself this season by winning his first tournament on the main circuit in May in Lyon. He played the second final of his career in Antwerp on Sunday, losing to Kazakh Alexander Bublik, after eliminating Stefanos Tsitsipas (7th), his second top 10, in the semi-final the day before. Ranked 251st at the start of the season, the Essonnian is now 38th, his best ranking.

“It is with great emotion but also a lot of excitement that I am preparing to open this new chapter alongside Arthur Fils,” commented Grosjean, quoted in the FFT press release. The former 4th player in the world became captain of the French Davis Cup team in December 2018, succeeding Amélie Mauresmo.

Last July, after intervention by its ethics committee, the FFT retained him in his role as captain but removed his responsibility for choosing the players selected for the French team to avoid possible conflicts of interest “resulting from various outdoor activities.

His successor at the head of the French Davis Cup team will be appointed at the end of the Masters 1000 tournament in Paris Bercy (October 30 – November 5), specifies the FFT.
