Tens of thousands of Indians hope for jobs in Israel

STORY – In the midst of war against Hamas, the Jewish state needs labor to replace Palestinian workers.

On this winter morning, there is a biting, humid cold on the campus of Rohtak University, which gnaws at the limbs. Hundreds of men between 20 and 40 years old congregate here and there. Some of them warm themselves around a small fire. Everyone is waiting for their turn for a job exam. Construction recruiters arrived from Israel where there are 10,000 positions to fill: carpenters, tilers, benders and plasterers. The war with Hamas and the cancellation of Palestinian workers’ permits have created a labor shortage. What’s better than India to fish for candidates? The most populous country in the world has arms to spare.
