At least 47 thousand people fell ill with cholera in September 2024, of whom more than 580 died.

This was reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) with reference to new outbreaks of the disease registered in Niger and Thailand, Day.Az reports with reference to Izvestia.

“From January 1 to September 29, 2024, a total of more than 439 thousand cholera cases and 3.4 thousand deaths were reported in five WHO regions. Although the number of cases in 2024 is 16% lower than last year, The 126% spike in deaths is deeply concerning,” the advisory said.

It also states that in September, “more than 47 thousand cases of cholera were reported from 14 countries, territories and regions in three WHO regions” and 583 deaths.

Since the last report, new cholera outbreaks have been reported in Niger (705 cases and 17 deaths) and Thailand (five cases without deaths), bringing the total number of affected countries in 2024 to 30.
