by time news

“The situation around the Zaporizhia power plant has reached a worrying level of escalation”, written on August 7 in the evening the daily Nezavissimaïa gazetawhich titles on the risk of a “second Chernobyl”, while “massive artillery fire” hit major infrastructure near the plant during the weekend.

On August 6, recall Nezavissimaïa gazetathe Ukrainian president had accused Russia of being responsible for these attacks, while Russian troops have controlled the town of Enerhodar, where the plant is located, since the beginning of the war. “We will draw the world’s attention to the situation around the plant and insist on the application of new sanctions against Russia for having created this global threat”and declared by Volodymyr Zelensky.

For the Russian side, however, there is no doubt that the artillery fire on the plant came from the Ukrainian army. The latest attacks damaged two high-voltage power lines, depriving 10,000 residents of the Zaporizhia region of electricity and water supply, the Russian daily still reports. “The most sensitive infrastructures of the plant were spared only thanks to the elements of Russian anti-aircraft defense”says the head of the National Center of the Russian Defense Directorate, Mikhail Mizintsev.
