This night was marked by strong movements of urban violence in the Paris region and in several other major cities in France. At the origin of this conflagration, the death of Nahel, a 17-year-old teenager killed Tuesday by a police officer during a roadside check. The representatives of the parties Les Républicains and Reconquête call for the establishment of a state of emergency “without delay”.

What the state of emergency allows
The state of emergency is an exceptional measure which provides for a strengthening of the powers of the police. It is not to be confused with the state of siege, which gives it prerogatives to the military authorities. This regime is decreed by the Council of Ministers on all or part of the territory in the event of imminent danger resulting from serious breaches of public order.
Once declared, the Minister of the Interior or the prefect of the department can assign certain people to residence or even search their homes day and night. Access to a department may be prohibited, as may the circulation of persons or vehicles. Certain meeting places may be temporarily closed and associations may be dissolved. Finally, the Minister of the Interior can interrupt any service of communication to the public online provoking the commission of acts of terrorism or making apology.
