Come on, With the presence of around eighty small dairy producers, community leaders and representatives of collection centers, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) socialized the “General Regulations to the Organic Law to promote the production, marketing, industrialization, consumption and pricing of milk and its derivatives” in the Cayambe canton.

The socialization of the regulation is carried out to inform dairy producers about the current regulations provided for in the law, its application and, above all, the calculation for setting the price of raw milk.

For Wilson Tapia, head of the Livestock Reconversion and Sustainability Project in Pichincha, this dissemination will significantly help producers. “In this way, producers know how the price of a litre of milk is constructed, what indicators should be considered and how these parameters should be interpreted” he said. He also highlighted that “the price is linked to health, quality and safety”.

According to the regulation, the parameters considered as a basis for bonuses on the price of a liter of milk are: percentages greater than 3% of fat, percentages greater than 2.9% of protein, hygienic quality with the existence of less than 158 thousand colony forming units and sanitary quality with the presence of less than 250,000 somatic cells. Additionally, producers who have certifications in Good Livestock Production Practices (GLP), as well as farms free of brucellosis and tuberculosis, will receive a bonus of 0.01 cents per liter of milk.

For his part, Nelson Lema, president of the Faldas de Cayambe Association of the Santo Domingo 2 parish, expressed his satisfaction with this socialization. “These spaces are very important to know, understand and be able to act as we should in the milking processes, which are what ultimately determine the price of our product,” he said.

Additionally, staff from the Phytosanitary and Zoosanitary Regulation and Control Agency (Agrocalidad) gave a workshop on Good Livestock Practices and milking management.

In the province of Pichincha, it is estimated that around 100,000 people are linked to milk production and the Cayambe canton in particular produces approximately 200,000 liters of milk daily.

The MAG, through the Pichincha District Directorate, will continue with these outreach sessions in the cantons of Mejía on Wednesday, June 26, and in San Miguel de los Bancos on July 4 of this year.
