A small village in northern Kosovo was gripped by terror last Sunday as armed attackers stormed an Orthodox monastery and engaged in intense gun battles throughout the area. The incident has reignited tensions in this volatile region of the country.

According to reports, at least 30 armed assailants, dressed in military gear and wearing face masks, blocked a road in the ethnically Serb-dominated village of Banjska before launching their attack. The skirmish resulted in the death of three assailants and one police officer, while two other officers sustained injuries. The assailants later barricaded themselves in a Serbian Orthodox monastery, where monks and pilgrims were allegedly held hostage.

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has held Serbia responsible, stating that the attack was orchestrated by organized criminal groups with political, financial, and logistical support from Belgrade. The country’s ambassador to the U.S., Ilir Dugolli, confirmed these claims and accused Serbia of inciting and sponsoring violence against Kosovo’s democratic institutions.

While reports in local media have suggested the possible involvement of Russia’s Wagner Group, KFOR, the NATO-led peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, dismissed such claims as unverified or misinformation. Former Defense Intelligence Agency officer Rebekah Koffler said preliminary intelligence suggests that the attackers had connections to Serbian special forces and Russian military intelligence. However, Koffler emphasized that the presence of Wagner mercenaries could not be confirmed.

Concerns about Russian interference and Serbian collaboration have been raised, with experts suggesting that they aim to perpetuate instability to distract NATO forces from Ukraine. The long-standing goal of both nations is to reverse Kosovo’s independence, and Koffler warns that they may be working together to create justification for the deployment of Serbian forces.

Further allegations have been made against Serbian authorities, with Kosovo’s ambassador to the U.S. claiming that Kosovo police seized documents linked to a notorious criminal and vice-leader of the leading Serbian political party in Kosovo. This indicates the involvement of Serbian authorities who have refused to hand over the perpetrators of the attack.

Serbia’s Ambassador Marko Djuric placed blame on Kurti’s government, accusing it of various missteps that contributed to the bloodshed. The ongoing conflict between Serbia and Kosovo, which originated from the 1999 war, poses a significant obstacle to their European integration. Serbia does not recognize Kosovo’s independence.

The Serbian Orthodox Church has condemned the violence, urging the preservation of peace and order. With a majority of Serbs remaining loyal to Belgrade in the ethnically divided region, tensions have persisted, hindering the path to peace and reconciliation.

The incident has further complicated the normalization talks between Serbia and Kosovo, which have been deadlocked for some time. Kurti’s rejection of the latest EU proposal, demanding recognition of Kosovo’s independence by Serbia before any progress, has only added to the disagreements and difficulties in these discussions.

As authorities seized a vast arsenal of weapons, including explosives and heavy arms, concerns over regional security are heightened. The international community will closely monitor the situation as further investigations are conducted to determine the origin and motivations behind this armed attack.
