Yesterday (Thursday) it was revealed in Reuters that several Tesla employees shared sensitive photos and videos with each other taken by the cameras in customers’ cars, over several years. Former employees told the network that colleagues shared the photos in groups and between individuals in 2019-2022.

One video that was sent showed a Tesla traveling at high speed and hitting a child on a bicycle, Reuters reported. Other footage included things like a naked man walking towards a car. “We could see them doing laundry and really intimate things. We could see their kids,” said one former employee.

According to the evidence, employees sent each other videos that were also taken in the garages of Tesla owners. The photo-sharing practice “was an invasion of privacy, frankly,” said one former employee. “And I’ve always joked that I would never buy a Tesla after seeing how they treat some of these people.”

On its website, Tesla says that every new vehicle it builds is equipped with eight exterior cameras. They also enable the Sentry Mode surveillance system that films people approaching the Tesla and other activity that appears suspicious.

The company states in its customer privacy notice that it designed the camera system to protect user privacy. He says that even if owners choose to share camera footage with Tesla for learning purposes, “the camera footage remains anonymous and is not linked to you or your vehicle,” unless it receives the footage due to a safety event, such as a crash or airbag deployment.
