A leaked internal Tesla email revealed that CEO Elon Musk will lay off more than 10% of the workforce.

Media outlets reported an email sent to at least three American employees, informing them that their dismissal had become effective.

According to the blog EV Electrek, which first reported the layoffs, the company did not disclose which teams would actually be affected. But with the number of Tesla employees reaching approximately 140,000 workers globally, the decision is likely to affect at least 14,000 employees.

“As we prepare the company for the next phase of growth, it is extremely important that we look at every aspect of the company to reduce costs and increase productivity,” Musk reportedly said in the letter. “As part of this effort, we conducted a comprehensive review of the organization and made the difficult decision to reduce our headcount by more than “From 10% globally. There is nothing I hate more, but it has to be done.”

Commenting on the reports of layoffs, Musk wrote on the website X: “About every five years, we need to reorganize the company and prepare it for the next stage of growth.”

The latest reports of employee layoffs come as the American automaker faces a decline in sales and fierce competition from Chinese electric car makers.

The media published a report earlier this month, later denied by Musk, that Tesla had canceled a long-planned project for a low-cost car and would focus on a new automated taxi.

It is noteworthy that the last time Musk announced a major layoff was in 2022, after he told executives that he had a “very bad feeling” about the American economy. He indicated at the time that he believed the company was overstaffed.
