Overall, the Model Y received a five-star rating in European tests, called Euro NCAP. A score of five stars indicates that a vehicle has excellent crash protection performance and robust crash avoidance technology. Tesla’s other vehicles have not been tested, but their new models have the same standard driver assistance technology as the Model Y.

Euro NCAP concluded that the Model Y’s automatic emergency braking system “performed well” in its response to pedestrians. Tests include scenarios such as a child chasing parked vehicles and a pedestrian crossing a street where a car is turning. The Tesla received a score of 7.7 out of 9 possible points on emergency braking near pedestrians.

Tesla’s history

Many drivers report that they feel less tired after using the Autopilot auto-steer function on long highway trips. But the system’s safety record has been called into question, including concerns about whether or not the automaker is doing enough to keep drivers engaged and attentive. The National Transportation Safety Board (American entity responsible for investigating accidents) asked Tesla to improve its driver assistance technologies after several accidents with victims. Research has found that drivers are more distracted when using Autopilot.
