Tesla Registrations Surge Across Northern Europe in October

Tesla vehicle registrations surged across Northern European markets in October 2026, extending a regional sales recovery driven by rising EV demand, fuel price increases, and government incentives while facing intensifying low-cost competition from Chinese automakers.

Registrations for new Tesla vehicles jumped significantly across several Northern European territories at the start of the fourth quarter, building on momentum from a record-breaking September. According to data from Mobility Sweden, Norway’s data compiler OFV, and Danish vehicle data platform bilstatistik.dk cited by Reuters, registrations soared 248% in Sweden, 131% in Norway, and 34% in Denmark during October. Continued growth in EV demand, government incentives, higher fuel prices, and favorable year-ago comparisons have all helped fuel this recovery.

This regional rebound follows a historic September in which The Motley Fool reported the electric vehicle maker registered 66,035 vehicles across Europe. That figure broke the previous monthly high of 60,934 set in March 2023, even before accounting for late-reporting data from Lithuania and Portugal that was expected to add at least another 1,000 registrations.

Model Y and Model 3 Drive European Sales Volume

Aging vehicle lineups did not stop consumers from snapping up Tesla’s core offerings. The Model Y captured the top spot in the European market with nearly 41,000 registrations in September, marking a 55% increase from the prior year. Meanwhile, the Model 3 secured second place with just over 25,050 registrations, more than doubling its volume from September 2025.

Market analysts note that September marked only the second time in history that both vehicles claimed the top two spots in European monthly registrations, echoing a milestone first reached in December 2022. This strong performance was supported by an influx of vehicle inventory exported from Tesla’s factory in Shanghai, China, which serves as a crucial supply hub for overseas markets.

Chinese Competitors Gain Ground in European Markets

Despite strong registration numbers, The Motley Fool points out a growing strategic challenge for Western automakers operating in Europe: Chinese automakers are following the exact same strategy of exporting vehicles from China into a more profitable market in Europe. Outperforming the broader European market in September was limited to high-volume non-Chinese automakers — specifically Mazda and Tata with Land Rover — which recorded much smaller increases of 24% and 35%, respectively.

Combined market share for Chinese brands reached 14.5% in September, with total registrations surging 104% compared to the previous year. Individual gains proved dramatic: Leapmotor registrations jumped 324%, while Chery, Xpeng, and Geely Group posted increases of 263%, 229%, and 151%, respectively. These rivals continue to leverage rapid vehicle development cycles and aggressive pricing to capture European consumer interest.

Upcoming Market Data and Order Backlog Status

The broader health of the European automotive sector will face further scrutiny as registration figures from Britain and Germany—the continent’s two largest car markets—are scheduled for release later in the week. These figures will clarify whether the robust momentum seen in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark extends across the entire region.
