BEIJING (Reuters) – Tesla (NASDAQ:) is working on an upgrade of its “gigacasting” technology to fuse almost all of the vehicles’ underbody parts into a single structure, Shanghai Securities News reported on Wednesday , citing anonymous sources close to the automaker.

The Chinese state newspaper, which based its report on a recent visit to the Tesla factory in Shanghai, did not say when and where the update will take place.

Tesla pioneered the use of massive presses with 6,000 to 9,000 tons of clamping pressure to shape the front and rear structures of its Model Y in its “gigacasting” process, which reduced production costs.

At its Shanghai factory, the company’s largest worldwide, Tesla has been molding the back of the Model Y since 2020, which has allowed it to reduce related costs by 40%.

Chinese electric vehicle makers including Xpeng (NYSE:) and Geely’s Zeekr are following Tesla and have adopted “gigapressing” technology in their manufacturing to reduce the weight of cars and lower costs, Shanghai Securities said. News.
