Test drive in the Ford Bronco: The Mustang for the rough

by time news

Dhe hottest car on the American market is not a Porsche, a McLaren, and certainly not a Tesla. The car everyone wants to drive right now is the Ford Bronco. The new edition of the 4×4 classic from the sixties and seventies is currently trading significantly above the list price.

The object of desire is above all the new Bronco with the more powerful of the two engines that are on offer. The 2.7-liter V6 develops 310 hp. As a special Outer Banks model with synthetic leather seats, the large navigation package and a few extras, it costs around $ 51,000. The second engine is a 270 hp 2.3-liter four-cylinder from the Ford Mustang.

The Bronco 2021 plays quite openly with the not always glorious history of the original model, which was discontinued in 1996. But the 4.41 meter long new edition not only looks back, it is a modern car. The countless customization options make it appear inside and outside like a toy car from Lego or Playmobil. “We started the Bronco family to improve every aspect of the off-road adventure, adding world-class chassis hardware and exclusive technology to raise the bar in the rugged 4×4 segment and take people further into the wild lead, ”says Ford CEO Jim Farley.

The direct competitor of the new Bronco is primarily the Jeep Wrangler. But secretly, Ford also wants to attract customers with its new edition who enjoy the original models of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, a Toyota Land Cruiser or the Land Rover Defender. Anyone who drives the Bronco will want the sound of a V8 despite a maximum torque of 540 Nm. But that’s not planned for the time being, but a purely electric version should come in 2023. With the gigantic 35-inch wheels of the off-road version, the Ford drives like a modern off-road vehicle with an admittedly noticeably high center of gravity and correspondingly strong pitching and rolling movements. You shouldn’t be too fast on winding roads. The practical consumption of 10.8 liters of Super per 100 kilometers remained bearable. While the four-cylinder transmits power with a manual seven-speed gearbox, the V6 features a well-coordinated ten-speed automatic.
