Tetouan: Signing of two agreements for the promotion of Jewish heritage in the Northern region

The first partnership agreement was signed by the Advisor to His Majesty the King and Founding President of the Essaouira-Mogador Association, André Azoulay, the President of the Municipality of Tetouan, Mustapha El Bakkouri, the Founding President of the Center for Studies and Research on Hebrew Law, Abdellah Ouzitane, the Executive President of the Center for Studies and Research on Hebrew Law in Morocco and Director of the Chair of Hebrew Law at Mohammed V University in Rabat, Farid El Bacha, and the President of the Sephardic Federation of Canada and Vice-President of the World Sephardic Federation, Avraham El Arar.

This agreement aims to preserve the documents of the Jews of Tetouan, and to establish a regulatory framework for partnership between the signatory parties, with the aim of highlighting the Jewish heritage of Tetouan and promoting the tangible and intangible heritage of the Jews of the city.

The signatories of this agreement undertake to organize joint seminars and scientific meetings to highlight the civilizational heritage of the Jews of Tetouan, to strengthen cooperation and coordination to collect, archive and preserve Jewish heritage in Tetouan, and to work to create a local archive for the Jews of Tetouan, with a view to setting up a museum to preserve the Jewish memory of the city.

This agreement also provides for the creation of a joint working group to ensure the implementation of cooperation and partnership programs.

Regarding the second partnership agreement, signed by Mr. Azoulay, the president of Abdelmalek Essaâdi University, Bouchta El Moumni, the representative of the Jewish community of Tetouan, Albert Hayoun, and Messrs. Ouzitane and El Bacha, it concerns the establishment of a regulatory framework for partnership between the parties, in order to encourage research into the history of the Jews of the Northern region, and to promote the tangible and intangible heritage of the Jews of Tetouan.

The parties undertake to organize colloquiums and scientific meetings to highlight the civilizational heritage of the Jews of the Northern region, strengthen cooperation and coordination to collect and archive Jewish heritage in Tetouan, and create a museum to preserve the Jewish memory of the city.

This ceremony took place in the presence of the governor of the province of Tetouan, Younes Tazi, elected officials, judicial officials, cultural and civil society actors, representatives of religious bodies and members of the Moroccan Jewish community.

This forum was also marked by the launch of the Center for Studies and Research on the History of the Jews of Tetouan and the inauguration of the gallery of documentary memory at the former headquarters of the municipality of Tetouan, which presents rare documents on the history of the Jews of the city.

This forum, organized by the municipality of Tetouan and the Abdelmalek Essaâdi University (UAE), with the support of the prefecture of Tetouan, on the occasion of the anniversary of the presentation of the Independence Manifesto, aims to promote the cultural influence and attractiveness of Tetouan, which constitutes a place of meetings, exchanges and mixing of cultures.
