LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 2 Texas Tech Red Raiders continued their dominant start to the season Saturday, rolling to a 9-0 victory over Detroit Mercy in five innings. The win, fueled by another stellar pitching performance, marked a historic day for the program, solidifying their position as a force in collegiate softball. The Red Raiders’ success isn’t just about winning; it’s about a pitching staff rewriting the record books, one no-hitter at a time.
Just hours after NiJaree Canady achieved a program first with her second career no-hitter as a Red Raider, teammate Kaitlyn Terry followed suit, tossing her own no-hitter against the Titans. This unprecedented feat resulted in the third no-hitter for Texas Tech (20-1) in the last five games, a testament to the team’s pitching depth and defensive prowess. The Red Raiders have also established a new program record with 11 consecutive hitless innings, demonstrating a level of pitching dominance rarely seen in college softball.
A Day of Dominance in the Circle
Terry’s performance was remarkably efficient, requiring just 65 pitches to complete five innings while striking out five batters. It was the 13th no-hitter in Texas Tech softball history, and improved her individual record to 8-0 on the season. The Red Raiders’ defense provided unwavering support, committing no errors and turning a double play to aid Terry’s effort. This defensive solidity is a key component of their success, allowing their pitchers to focus on their craft.
The team’s recent success extends beyond Terry and Canady. The Red Raiders’ pitching staff has become a national talking point, drawing attention to the program and attracting fans eager to witness their historic run. According to Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Canady’s no-hitter on Saturday included 13 strikeouts, showcasing her ability to consistently overpower opposing hitters.
Offense Provides Support
While the pitching stole the present, the Red Raiders’ offense contributed significantly to the victory. Mihyia Davis and Taylor Pannell each went 2-for-3 with an RBI, consistently delivering clutch hits. Mia Williams added two RBIs despite not recording a hit, showcasing her ability to drive in runs through sacrifice flies. Terry also contributed at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a two-run double that gave Texas Tech an early 3-0 lead.
How the Game Unfolded
The Red Raiders set the tone early, with Terry striking out the first batter of the game. Davis led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single and promptly stole second base – bringing her season total to 20 stolen bases. Williams followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Davis and giving Texas Tech a 1-0 advantage.
Terry continued to dominate in the circle, retiring the Titans in order in the second inning. The Red Raiders capitalized on the momentum, adding two more runs with an RBI double while the bases were loaded. Davis then scored Lauren Allred on a ground ball, extending the lead to 4-0.
Detroit Mercy managed to get a runner on base in the third inning via a walk, but Terry quickly regained control, recording a pair of strikeouts to finish the frame. The Red Raiders continued to build their lead in the third, with a bases-loaded walk by Jasmyn Burns and an RBI single by Allred adding two more runs. Williams and Jackie Lis both added sacrifice flies in the fourth, and Pannell connected on a double, ultimately securing the 9-0 victory.
Looking Ahead
The Red Raiders will conclude the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic on Sunday with a doubleheader, beginning at 11:30 a.m. This will be another opportunity for the team to showcase their talent and continue their impressive winning streak. The team’s focus will undoubtedly be on maintaining their pitching dominance and continuing to provide offensive support, as they aim to build on their already remarkable season.
