“I don’t understand why we have to play these tournaments at the end of December. These are the worst dates for any chess player.”

As reported by İdman.biz, this was stated by Azerbaijani grandmaster Teymur Radjabov, who noted that FIDE needs to find a more convenient time to hold the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships. In recent years, they have been held in the last week of December. This time, they will be held in New York.

“FIDE doesn’t have many events for the elite throughout the year. It would be possible to set aside five days to play at a time that suits everyone. Although I’m not an expert in compiling a calendar, I’d be surprised if FIDE didn’t have other options,” Sport-Express quotes Teimour as saying.

“There are actually a lot of things. Some people have about a day to get home, some want to celebrate the New Year with their families. Some celebrate Christmas and are not ready to play on these dates. I have repeatedly told the FIDE leadership that this is a big mistake. I know a huge number of chess players who missed this tournament because of the timing. And when the World Rapid and Blitz Championships were held in the summer, almost everyone played. I hope that at some point the FIDE leadership will find a loophole to hold such a major event on adequate dates,” Radjabov emphasized.
