Thailand Rejects World Court Authority Amid Border Dispute
Tensions flare as Thailand firmly rebuffs the International Court of Justice (ICJ) amidst a Cambodian border dispute, with officials assuring the public of their preparedness.
- Thailand rejects the authority of the World Court (ICJ).
- The Interior Minister assures the public of preparedness on the Thai-Cambodian border.
- Provincial governors are ready to maintain public order.
In a bold declaration amidst escalating tensions with Cambodia, Thailand has made it clear it will not recognize the authority of the World Court, concerning a long-standing border dispute. This stance was articulated today by Mr. Anutin Charnwirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, during a field inspection in Udon Thani.
What is Thailand’s official stance on the ongoing border dispute with Cambodia? Mr. Anutin stated, “Thailand does not accept the power of the World Court. No one can force us,” emphasizing the government’s firm position on the matter.
The issue, which has persisted for some time, involves a complex mix of historical claims and territorial disagreements. The Thai government’s unwavering stance, as explained by Mr. Anutin, is that it is “not related to Cambodian operations,” viewing the matter as a separate issue and defending Thailand’s position.
Border Preparedness and Public Safety
The Interior Minister also discussed the government’s preparations for the border situation. The provincial governor in the Cambodian border area is actively working to maintain public order, while the authorities are focused on accelerating hospital readiness and establishing field hospitals.
The Thai government is taking measures to explore and improve existing infrastructure, specifically focusing on schools, temples, and communities, with monks and elderly people, to safeguard them. This preparedness is meant to assure the population that safety is a top priority.
“Don’t worry, the governor is fully prepared. We absolutely do not leave the people,” Mr Anutin reiterated.
