If the giant panda ‘Fubao’ was very popular in Korea, the baby hippopotamus ‘Mudeng’ is loved in Thailand.
According to Thailand’s Khao Kheow Zoo, Mudeng is a pygmy hippopotamus born on July 10 between female Jonah (25) and male Tony (24). Pygmy hippos are an internationally endangered species, and are also called ‘baby hippos’ due to their small size.
Mudeng’s name comes from ‘Mudeng’, a Thai dumpling dish. It also means plump pig. Over 20,000 people participated in the vote to decide the name. Mudeng is characterized by bright eyes and a plump body. It is said that he has a lively personality as much as his humorous expression. He is especially popular for playing around with his zookeepers. In a video posted on the zoo’s social network service (SNS), Mudeng is surprised and opens his mouth wide when the zookeeper sprinkles water on him.
Fan art depicting Mudeng is also pouring in. Cosmetics brand Sephora has even released cosmetics with similar shades to Mudeng at its Thai stores.
According to the Bangkok Post, visitors start lining up from 9 a.m. to see Mudeng.
When Mudeng’s image was shared on domestic social media, netizens responded with comments such as, “It’s so cute that they named the baby hippo Dong-Grang-Ddaeng,” “It’s so funny how he runs towards the zookeeper,” and “He’s so soft.”
