It is a film about the Tata Boys Group, not a film by the Tata Boys Group. It may happen that she won’t like it, said director Marek Najbrt this Wednesday at the Karlovy Vary festival. The holder of four Czech Lions brought here a new full-length documentary called Tata_bojs.doc.

A debate with the creators took place on Wednesday early evening. The opening ceremony of the film will soon follow at the Pupp cinema, followed by a concert in the park. Cinemas will start screening the new movie on September 5.

“It’s Marko Najbrt’s autonomous view of our band as he perceives it. He was given a huge range of archive material from which he could freely choose with the editor,” forwards drummer and singer Milan Cais. He and his teammates had to respect that it would be Najbrt’s view of them, not an autobiography. “I had a tendency to tinker with it a bit, I’ll actually see the final version for the first time today,” adds the group’s frontman.

To his teammate, bassist Mardoš, the chosen procedure seems logical. “Bands make music, films are made by directors and filmmakers. If we were to make a film by ourselves, it would be total nonsense. At the same time, the band is such a child of ours, so it’s hard to get rid of it completely,” he thinks.

“If we were to paraphrase the text of one of our songs, we feel that the film is not under our direction,” sums up Cais, referring to the song Filmařská.

Director Marek Najbrt, known as the author of the occupation drama Protektor or the satirical series Kancelář Blaník, tells the story of the band in the form of a playful collage of materials from archives, concert recordings and futuristic live clips. Actors from Prague’s Vosto5 theater look at the history of Tata Boys in the roles of scientists from the distant future. From this gradually emerges a portrait of a special group that, despite the alternative nature of their work, enjoys the interest of the general public. Her work is closely connected with other genres, from literature to film to fine art, which Tata Bojs confirmed in 2018 with an exhibition in Prague’s Dox.

The band was founded in 1988 by then fourteen-year-old classmates from elementary school in Prague’s Hanspaulka, drummer and singer Cais with bassist Mardoša. After the first half-studio, half-live recording Šagali, Šagáli released in 1991, it was not until Lada’s next album, on which they set Josef Lady’s nursery rhymes to music, that went on sale.

The turning point in their career was the transition to the multinational Warner Music label with the album Futuretro in 2000. They then received four Anděl awards, including a statuette for the group of the year, for the conceptual Nanoalbum, since then several more recordings followed, including the latest title Jedna nula from 2020. Their best-known songs include Pawns, Attention Aux Hommes!, Dancers or Repetition. In addition to Cais and Mardoš, the current line-up consists of guitarist Vladimír Bár, keyboardist Matěj Belko and sound engineer Dušan Neuwerth. Last year, Tata Boys celebrated 35 years of existence.
