This year, Prince William avoided the Olympics. What stopped the British royal from traveling to Paris?
At this year’s Olympic Games, Princess Anne and Countess Sophie supported the participating UK athletes in Paris – but not the British heir to the throne, Prince William. Now he reveals the reason.
During a visit to the British swimming pool Birtley Community Pool in northeast England, the 42-year-old met Olympic participants Adam Peaty and Tom Dean and Paralympic athletes Maisie Summer-Newton and Louise Fiddes. When asked whether William would be at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, the prince said no and explained that his absence was a protective measure. Although he “absolutely” wanted to take part in the sporting event, he found out through an interview that Adam Peaty was suffering from Covid at the time of the event. William didn’t want to risk “bringing Covid home because my wife was obviously having chemotherapy.” Princess Kate, who made her cancer diagnosis public in March 2024, has now completed the latter. She announced this on Instagram at the beginning of September.
William didn’t watch the Olympic Games on site out of consideration for his wife, but he did watch it on TV with Kate: “We watched the whole thing. We were transfixed every day,” he reported during his visit to Birtley.
