Hardik Pandya will lead the Mumbai Indians instead of Rohit Sharma in the next season of IPL, the franchise has announced this decision some time ago. But why Rohit was removed from the captaincy, that explanation is not available till now. Finally, Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene spoke about the matter in front of the media.

In an interview to Geo Cinema, Jayawardene said, ‘It (moving Rohit) was a tough decision. It was really emotional. Fans reacted to such a decision. I think everyone got emotional and we certainly respect their emotions. But at the same time as a franchise we have to make decisions like that.’

However, Jayawardene expressed optimism that Rohit will play an important role in the team. He does not have to play with the pressure of the captain with the bat. That’s why he thinks Rohit will play well.

Jayawardene said, ‘It is very important for us to have Rohit in the team on and off the field to guide the next generation. He is truly a talented cricketer. I am sure he (Rohit) will be part of the legacy to guide those who will take cricket forward in the future.’

Jayawardene feels that newcomers should be brought into the leadership. He cited the example of Sachin Tendulkar for the decision to drop the experienced Rohit and make the less experienced Hardik Pandya the captain.

Jayawardene said, ‘Sachin played with youngsters. He led someone else and ensured that Mumbai Indians were going in the right direction. It’s the same thing. We discussed it and everyone accepted it. We have taken this decision thinking about the next season.
