Spanish Television hit rock bottom in 2021 and 2022. The public entity posted the worst audience data in its history when it was also going through a serious leadership crisis. With three presidents in the last five years, stability seems to have come to TVE thanks to Elena Sánchez, the last to take office at the end of last year. In recent months, the recovery of the public entity is visible, but also minimal. They have improved their share data by just over one point compared to their historical lows, but thanks to the collapse in Telecinco audiences, the figures look different. Now they are no longer fighting for crumbs but are fighting for second position on the list of the most watched channels of the day. And even, on many occasions, their spaces like ‘La Promesa’ are leaders in their segment. The strategy? Prioritize sports broadcasts such as the Qatar World Cup, which cost 37.6 million euros, and successful programs from external productions.
The focus is on the latter. Information published by ‘El Economista’ in November 2022 indicated that five external production companies capitalized 50% of the spending on TVE programs. Among them, for example, was Shine Iberia, which produces the successful kitchen reality show ‘Masterchef’. Spaces that captivate viewers thanks to the talent of their presenters. Faces that manage to conquer the audience and bill accordingly for their cachet.
In the last year, many media outlets have requested the Transparency and Good Government Council (CTBG) for the salary that TVE pays to these presenters. At first, the entity refused to provide them but finally revealed, gradually, the amounts that were paid to each of them. However, he did not offer the salaries of the house workers, those hired directly by TVE.

Tele days 25,000 euros per program/325,000 euros per season
Julia Otero
Ten years after her last stage at TVE, the TVE Board of Directors – chaired by Elena Sánchez – approved recovering Julia Otero for the small screen.
