Spanish Television hit rock bottom in 2021 and 2022. The public entity posted the worst audience data in its history when it was also going through a serious leadership crisis. With three presidents in the last five years, stability seems to have come to TVE thanks to Elena Sánchez, the last to take office at the end of last year. In recent months, the recovery of the public entity is visible, but also minimal. They have improved their share data by just over one point compared to their historical lows, but thanks to the collapse in Telecinco audiences, the figures look different. Now they are no longer fighting for crumbs but are fighting for second position on the list of the most watched channels of the day. And even, on many occasions, their spaces like ‘La Promesa’ are leaders in their segment. The strategy? Prioritize sports broadcasts such as the Qatar World Cup, which cost 37.6 million euros, and successful programs from external productions.

The focus is on the latter. Information published by ‘El Economista’ in November 2022 indicated that five external production companies capitalized 50% of the spending on TVE programs. Among them, for example, was Shine Iberia, which produces the successful kitchen reality show ‘Masterchef’. Spaces that captivate viewers thanks to the talent of their presenters. Faces that manage to conquer the audience and bill accordingly for their cachet.

In the last year, many media outlets have requested the Transparency and Good Government Council (CTBG) for the salary that TVE pays to these presenters. At first, the entity refused to provide them but finally revealed, gradually, the amounts that were paid to each of them. However, he did not offer the salaries of the house workers, those hired directly by TVE.

Of the published salaries, these are ten of the presenters with the most striking salary on public television:

Tele days 25,000 euros per program/325,000 euros per season

Julia Otero

Ten years after her last stage at TVE, the TVE Board of Directors – chaired by Elena Sánchez – approved recovering Julia Otero for the small screen. The radio host would present a program called ‘Días de Tele’, to reflect on the most avant-garde programs that made history on television. Those who promoted social and cultural changes.

The program premiered in January and ended its first season in April with a total of 13 episodes broadcast. According to data revealed by TVE, upon request from other media to the Transparency Portal, the presenter billed 25,000 euros for each broadcast. That is, a total of 325,000 euros during the season. The highest salary in TVE of those known so far.

Incredible Duos 20,000 euros per program/240,000 euros per season

Juan and Medio

Juan José Bautista Martín, better known as ‘Juan y Medio’, billed 20,000 euros per program as host of ‘Dúos Increíbles’. This musical talent show had up to twelve episodes last season, so the veteran presenter’s salary went up to 240,000 euros.

However, with the arrival of the new season, TVE has decided to give the program a facelift and has chosen Radio Nacional announcers Xavi Martínez and Julia Varela as new presenters of ‘Dúos Increíbles’. One of the reasons why the entity would have decided to change faces would be because of the high cachet of ‘Juan y Medio’.

Neighborhood cinema 4,000 euros per program/160,000 euros per season

Alaska

The singer Alaska is another of the faces that falls in the premiere of the new television season this September. TVE has dispensed with the services of the presenter of ‘Cine de barrio’, according to the artist, after three years at the helm of the program. In the last season, with 40 episodes, Alaska billed approximately 160,000 euros, 4,000 euros for each episode presented. She is replaced by Inés Ballester this week.

Grand Prix 20,000 euros per program/140,000 euros per season

Ramon Garcia

The return of the ‘Grand Prix’ to TVE also meant Ramontxu’s return to public television. Although this time without a heifer. Ramón García was once again at the helm of that program that was a success in the summers at the beginning of the century. And his salary has been in line with the fame of the program. The Bilbao presenter charged 20,000 euros for each of the seven episodes of the renewed ‘Grand Prix’. A total of 140,000 euros.

The figure is double what her two colleagues billed. The co-presenter and actress Michelle Calvó and the YouTuber Cristinini earned 70,000 euros each.

Masterchef 10,000 euros per program/130,000 euros per season

Jordi Cruz, Pepe Rodríguez and Samantha Vallejo-Nágera

Other well-known faces of TVE who made more than 100,000 euros per season were the judges of ‘Masterchef’. The kitchen reality show has 13 episodes and each of the protagonists received 10,000 euros per day of recording.

The culinary talent show is the true flagship of public television. It is the undisputed leader in its audience segment and the most watched program on the network beyond sports broadcasts.

La Plaza 1,600 euros per program/8,000 euros per week

Jordi Gonzalez

One of TVE’s big objectives for this new season is to become stronger in the afternoon slot. He already attracts thousands of viewers with the soap opera ‘La Promesa’ but has not yet managed to get the audience to stay to enjoy ‘La Plaza’, Jordi González’s new current affairs program.

The one who was one of the best-known faces of Telecinco arrives on public television after a year practically absent. He will not have it easy because he will compete face to face with Sonsoles Ónega and Ana Rosa Quintana. He will charge 8,000 euros per week for this and the program will have a minimum of 70 episodes.

Night D 11,000 euros per program/110,000 euros per season

Eva Soriano

When the digital portal ‘Público’ revealed that Eva Soriano was the highest paid external presenter on TVE, the networks were filled with criticism. Then the salaries of other faces like Julia Otero were published and critics forgot about Soriano. But the comedian took it with great humor that it was leaked that she charges 11,000 euros for each program on TVE. ‘La noche D’ had ten episodes in its first season and the stand-up comedian made a total of 110,000 euros.

«What hurts me the most about all this is that there are people who say that I have charged what I have charged for sucking dicks. Let’s put ourselves in the situation where they would have paid me 11,000 euros to suck a cock. It’s not money, it’s… how should I… What would a blowjob for 11,000 euros be like? », she asked herself in one of her private performances outside of television.

El Conquistador/Masters of Sewing 98,000 euros/72,000 euros

Raquel Sanchez Silva

Raquel Sánchez Silva is one of the main presenters of TVE. Her success at the helm of ‘Maestros de la Costura’, which already has five seasons, has helped her gain a place as co-presenter of the public entity’s new reality show, ‘El Conquistador’.

For this reason, Sánchez Silva had to travel to the Dominican Republic, along with his program partner Julian Iantzi, to record the reality show. Two months of work in the Caribbean for which he has billed a total of 98,000 euros.

To that amount must be added her salary as presenter of the fashion reality show, which she also directs alongside judges Lorenzo Caprile, María Escoté and Alejandro Palomo. The communicator earned 72,000 euros last season, while Caprile earned 75,000 euros; and Escoté and Palomo, 60,000 euros each.

The Conqueror 68,300 euros

Julian Iantzi

TVE’s new signing to present ‘El Conquistador’ is Julian Iantzi. Lesaka is the face of the program on Basque public television, which has been sweeping audiences for twenty editions. Of course, this season it will no longer present ‘El Conquis vasco’ by decision of the ETB leadership. At the national level, TVE has entrusted him with the task of directing the reality show, which for now has premiered with discreet audience data. He is accompanied by Raquel Sánchez Silva, who has earned more than Iantzi during their stay in the Dominican Republic. The Navarrese presenter has earned approximately 68,300 euros, twenty thousand less than his partner.

La Hora de la 1,700 euros per program/6,000 euros per month to co-direct

Silvia Intxaurrondo

The face that is gaining strength on TVE is that of Silvia Intxaurrondo. The journalist co-presents ‘La Hora de la 1’ with Marc Sala and she has become strong in the audiences during the last season in the morning slot. Her shining moment was during the general election campaign, when she corrected the PP candidate’s statement about pensions that was not entirely true. The video clip with Alberto Núñez Feijóo went viral.

The curious thing about the Biscayan presenter is that she earns a double salary on TVE. The first, as a presenter. She bills 700 euros per program, which is 3,500 euros per week. Her work on ‘La Hora de la 1’ lasted last season from September to July. Ten months of intense work where, in addition to being paid for her role as presenter, she also had a salary as co-director of the program. The latter is 6,000 euros per month.
