What you must remember :110 fencers took part in the 11th national fencing championships organized on the external esplanade of the national assembly in Porto Novo, by the Beninese federation. At the end of this national meeting held from September 12 to 15, 2023, the different champions were known. Indeed, after 3 days of competition in the 5 categories this year, the Beninese fencing federation registered its new champions. Among the youngest (U13), Urbain Gboyo (boy) and Gracia Dossa (girl) are crowned. In the under-15 tournament, the champion titles went to Godwin Ado (boy) and Brigitte Wéwétabo (girl). On the U17 side, Esther Kpozounne won the title for the girls while for the boys, Moucharaph Touré who was crowned. In the under-20 category, Cyril Sonde in men and Natacha Oboe in women are crowned. In the senior category, Ricardo Ahodegnon dominated the competition and won the title of champion of Benin. In the team ranking, the two flagship clubs Oasis Escrime de Ouidah and Escrime club Akassato in the commune of Abomey-Calavi held their place. The Ouidah club finished first with 15 medals including 5 in Gold, 4 in Silver and 6 in Bronze. The Akassato club took 2nd place in this ranking with 10 medals including 3 in Gold, 3 in Silver and 4 in Bronze. The Cotonou club based in Akpakpa ranked 3rd with 8 medals including 1 in Gold, 2 in Silver and 5 in Bronze. The new Porto-Novo club (Panthères Noires) made a great breakthrough and left with 2 Bronze medals.

What the president of the FBE said:At the end of the championships, the President of the executive committee Jacques Okoumassoun expressed his satisfaction at seeing this youth express themselves for 3 days beyond the daily life of their clubs. He also paid tribute to the pioneer fencers who blazed trails for current generations. The popular success of this Porto Novo meeting after that of Ouidah and the numerous expressions of interest from several parents strengthen the executive in its desire to bring the discipline even closer to the populations of other departments of Benin during the next editions. Jacques Okoumassoun also reiterated his gratitude to the Beninese national Olympic and sports committee for the donation of 3 tracks to international standards worth 10 million FCFA. He also did not forget the international federation which also donated 2 slopes to the Beninese federation in view of the efforts and positive results of Beninese fencing on the international scene.

Between the lines : It should be noted that in addition to the championships, a 2-day camp for athletes and a refresher session for officials and referees provided this week of promotion of Beninese fencing in the capital Porto Novo.
