The technical director of the National Institute of Statistics (INE), Diego Aboal, recently reported that the 2023 Census in Uruguay managed to exceed initial expectations by registering more than 2,500,000 people and 1,300,000 registered addresses.
This achievement is a milestone in collecting accurate and up-to-date demographic data. The 2023 Census survey has been carried out in more than 40 localities in Uruguay, where key demographic data has been collected.
In addition, special emphasis has been placed on coverage of settlements through group operations and in some 120,000 rural points. To guarantee safety and the proper development of these tasks, work has been done jointly with the Police.
Uruguay has achieved an outstanding milestone in terms of digital response in Latin America, reaching an impressive 54% participation. This is largely due to the effort made by the INE to facilitate online registration, giving citizens a faster and easier option to participate in the census. It is important to note that those who have not yet received a visit from the census takers have the possibility to register online.
International observers and regional recognition of the 2023 Census in Uruguay
The 2023 Census in Uruguay has attracted the attention and recognition of other countries and international organizations dedicated to the collection of statistical data.
Delegates of statistical institutes and offices of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Peru and Paraguay, as well as representatives of the Latin American and Caribbean Center for Demography (Celade) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), have visited Uruguay as well international observers. This visit is a testament to Uruguay’s commitment to the quality and accuracy of its demographic data.
