French President Emmanuel Macron helped present France’s bid to the IOC and assured that the national government that will be formed after the 2024 Summer Games in Paris will provide all organizational guarantees.
The IOC members accepted his promises and approved the host of the 2030 Games, with 84 members voting for, four against and seven abstaining.
“We want to thank you for your trust,” Macron said in a short speech after being awarded the right to host the Olympics. “We will honor our commitments.”
The governments of the host countries must formally sign the financial and security guarantees essential to the organization and management of the Games.
The IOC set a deadline of October 1, by which the next French prime minister must sign a document guaranteeing the main conditions for the 2030 Games. The National Assembly elected this month must ratify this document by March 1, said IOC President Thomas Bach.
The guarantees requested by the IOC have not been possible in France in recent weeks, as Macron called for snap parliamentary elections, which ended on July 7. The government has not yet been formed.
France’s bid, which the IOC favored in November, was the only one. It envisages holding competitions in several ski resorts in the French Alps and ice sports venues in Nice.
Five and a half years before the scheduled opening ceremony of the games is the shortest time to prepare for the modern Olympic Games.
France has previously held the Winter Olympic Games three times – the first games in 1924 in Chamonix, in 1968 in Grenoble and in 1992 in Albertville.
It will be the second Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The first ones were held in the city in 2002.
83 IOC members supported Salt Lake City as the host of the games, while six were against.
The IOC included a clause in the host city’s contract stating that local officials must cooperate with current and future US presidents and members of Congress. This is done in order to give the IOC the ability to terminate the contract if the authority of the World Doping Agency (WADA) is undermined.
The IOC is concerned about an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) into a case in which WADA cleared 23 Chinese swimmers despite testing positive for doping.
