The unknown, the mysteries of the world and what we don’t know we don’t know: Unknown
Unknowns. An introduction to Mysteries the theme that inspires the next Triennale Milano International Exhibition, the twenty-third of a story that will celebrate its first centenary in 2023 and that will open to the public from 15 July to 11 December 2022.

A program of exhibitions and projects – presented on Monday 30 May in Rome at the Farnesina by Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, by the secretary general of the Bureau International des Expositions Dimitri S. Kerkentzes and by the president of the Triennale Stefano Boeri – which will bring together 400 artists and designers and architects from over forty countries. Over 600 works (including 23 commissions), and twenty-two international participations with special attention to the African continent (six national pavilions: Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda).

The unknown, understanding what are the challenges and horizons of human knowledge – said Boeri presenting the review – today at the center of all sciences. We often say that only five percent of the universe, ocean floor maps, brain synapses are known. Here, the great shocks of the first twenty years of the new millennium have made us realize that we have lost track of one hundred percent. We no longer know what the true limits of our species are on the planet. For this reason, the exploration of what we do not know that we do not know becomes central. And to cast a new gaze on the unknown – in a multidisciplinary journey that will unite art, sciences, imaginations – as main curators of the event, astrophysics were called. Ersilia Vaudo (Chief diversity officer to the European Space Agency), e Francis Kr, just awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize 2022, the most important recognition of the discipline. Kr, born in Burkina Faso, will curate the installations in the common areas of the Triennale and two installations dedicated to the voices of the African continent. Vaudo curer instead the thematic exhibition, the nerve center of the 23 Exhibition, with one hundred works, projects and installations by artists, researchers and designers to confront the unknown.

Unknown that returns as a Leitmotiv also in the exhibition Real world, curated by Herv Chands, artistic director of Fondation Cartier. Grand Invit 2021-2024 the artist and theater director Romeo Castellucci with two projects: a performative one entitled tomorrowwhich anticipates the Exhibition and open to the public in these days (until 5 June), and an installation, ECscheduled for November.
