The 23rd Volubilis International Festival of Traditional Music, from September 12 to 15 (organizers)

Rabat – The 23rd edition of the Volubilis Festival of traditional world music will be held from September 12 to 15 in the Volubilis archaeological site and in Meknes, at the initiative of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication (Department of Culture).

Placed under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this cultural event is part of the ministry’s strategy to preserve cultural, artistic and intangible heritage in its various creative and expressive manifestations, and to strengthen support for artistic creation by opening up to world cultures, a ministry statement said on Sunday. This event, organized in partnership with the prefecture of Meknes, “is one of the festivals linked to an archaeological and historical site, like several festivals aimed at celebrating cultural heritage in its different types, its different expressions and its geographical affiliations,” the same source stressed, adding that it is an opportunity to pay tribute to practitioners and those who watch over this cultural and artistic heritage. This festival is also an opportunity to draw attention to the tourist, cultural and historical characteristics of the archaeological sites and the geographical areas that host them (Volubilis archaeological site, the city of Moulay Driss Zerhoun and the old medina of Meknes), while contributing to strengthening the cultural and artistic influence of these regions and integrating them into their socio-economic environment, adds the same source. This edition combines cultural exchange and artistic crossbreeding through the programming of 44 artistic evenings, hosted by a host of artists and musical troupes from Morocco and elsewhere, representing different styles and creative colors of traditional musical heritage. These evenings will take place in four spaces: the Volubilis archaeological site, the main square, the “Lahdim” square and the Mohamed Al Manouni Cultural Center. This event will be marked by the participation of several brotherly and friendly countries including Spain, China, Senegal and Jordan, the press release states. Furthermore, the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication will pay tribute to several artists such as Mohamed Briouel, Mohamed El Ouali, Hadda O Akki and Bouchaib Benaguida in order to devote the culture of recognition to the pioneers of the performing arts in Morocco.
